Quick Installation and Convenience The Philips VOIP841 is a self-contained unit that requires no installation of software or connection to a computer; simply plug the base into any power outlet in your house, connect it to your broadband connection, and you can start making free Skype telephone calls right away. DECT Frequency for Security and Extended Battery Life By using the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) frequency at 1.8GHz, the VOIP841 offers you enhanced security features and a longer battery life than other frequencies. On battery power, the VOIP841 offers talk time of up to 12 hours and a standby time of up to 120 hours.
Each base station can accommodate up to four handsets, and up to four base stations can be used together for a total of 16 handsets. For office or home use, the intercom mode allows you to use one handset to call another handset located in a different room.

I bought this phone several months ago because I have a lot of family in Australia and Skype makes it much cheaper to communicate with them. I didn't want to have to be on my laptop every time I called and I also wanted to be able to receive incoming calls like an ordinary phone.
I have been very happy with this product. It looks very stylish and the interface is easy enough to navigate. I keep the base connector box in my basement next to my wireless connection and the phone unit upstairs.

From the horse's mouth... 'Philips' has discontinued the 3rd party production of the Skype VOIP841x series.
Don't get stung... do not pay gouging prices, nor pay for the Philips VOIP841 PC-Free DECT 6.0 Wireless IP, which most likely isn't in stock, nor will ever be, and end up fighting to get your money back.

Both this phone and the similar Linksys 400 have quadrupled in price in the last month (~$100ish to >$400)?? what the heck is going on? does anyone know if they have been discontinued or something?

have it for 1 year.no disappointment at all.its a substitute of my phone home.thanks philips,nice job was done.actually if someone is annoyed by choosing every time what line to use he can go to the the settings and use skype out.otherwise second line is what i expect as an update.but anyway i'm really happy having it.
