Amazon.com Review: In arid climates or the cold, dry days of winter, owning a humidifier makes an awful lot of sense. A humidifier protects household occupants from static electricity shocks, prevents dry, itchy skin, allows stressed lungs to breathe with more comfort, and infuses the room's environment with needed moisture to furniture, fabrics, and plants for long-lasting health. But for all of these positive attributes, using a humidifier may also produce some nasty and harmful results. If not properly cared for, a humidifier becomes the breeding ground for assorted viruses, bacteria, mildew, and mold. In other words, the soothing moist air exhaled by humidifier might be much more harmful than helpful in the long run. To keep the air clean and amply humidified, it is essential to regularly replace the humidifier's filter, where the impurities often fester. Hamilton Beach recognizes the importance of clean filters by offering this replacement filter from their True Air line.
The filter fits Cool Mist models 05520 and 05521. These humidifiers accommodate rooms up to 1200 square feet and feature a 4-gallon output per tank. The filter drops into the tank for simple installation. Filters should be replaced every three months and humidifier water changed weekly to ensure clean breathing air. The Cool Mist humidifiers are also dishwasher- safe for thorough, regular cleaning. To extend the filter's life, some users swap out filters weekly to allow the spare filter to dry well to keep mold from developing. Rotating the filter also may prolong its life. No warranty is available for the replacement filter. This item measures 11.1 by 6.8 by 3.1 inches. --Jessica Reuling

It's a shame that these filters cost so much, I'd have sworn I paid more like $7 each for them last year, but they are worth buying. I have the humidifier which works very well, and we haven't had any trouble with it, but I sure wish the price would go down!
And gasoline, too...
Rating: - Short-lived
The filter lasts for about two weeks, after which it turns completely useless: it stops soaking up water more than two inches from the bottom (the rest of it remaining dry as the Sahara desert), thereby rendering the humidifier totally useless at any speed. The cost of filters for a single season is more than the price of the humidifier itself.
Rating: - Exhorbitant rise in price
Price rise from last year 6.99 to 15.00 this year. Disgraceful.

If you're on Amazon looking to buy these filters you likely have bought the Hamilton Beach humidfier at a real store and now need filters, only to find your real store doesn't stock them.
I've had the HB humidifier for a couple of years and have used many filters; they are *very* expensive for what they are. They are cheaper if you buy them direct from HB (or even third pary sellers through Amazon), but by the time you pay shipping with the other sellers it's all pretty close. The expense of the filters though is an important point to consider if you are considering to buy this type ... Read More

Sure, it works just wonderfully when I first replace the filter, but it only lasts about 3 weeks, not 3 months. We use the humidifier all day and night in our very dry apartment which is only 500 square feet, and after even 1 week I start smelling the moldy smell. This is despite cleaning the tank and tray every 2 days (they recommend once a week) and turning the filter over every day. And you have to keep all the windows and doors closed, or it won't work at all. That makes for very stagnant air quality. Very disappointing.
