Amazon.com Review: This portable air cleaner is recommended for filtering the air in a closed room as large as 168 square feet (12 by 14 feet). As it continuously circulates a room's air--about six times per hour--it employs two filters to remove smoke, pollen, dust, animal dander, dust mites, molds, bacteria, viruses, and odors. Especially useful for asthmatics and allergy sufferers, the cleaner contains a true HEPA filter that is at least 99.97 percent effective at trapping extremely tiny particles (as small as 0.3 microns) while a prefilter reduces odors. Honeywell's IntelliCheck system permits monitoring the filters' lives. Each filter has a button. Pressing a button activates a light, which blinks or shines steadily. One blink indicates that the filter has lots of life remaining, two blinks means less life, three blinks means even less, and a steady light indicates the filter needs changing. The HEPA filter lasts one to three years; the prefilter, three months. Filter replacement is simple, and replacement filters can be ordered separately. Works well. Not as noisy as I thought it would be. Was new in orginal package. No problems.

I set this up and turned it on and my husband immediately said it had to go back. While I really wanted an air purifier for my baby's room, I had to agree. The one I received was just too loud, even at its lowest setting. The noise bothered us even through 2 doors and from 50 feet away. I have a now discontinued Honeywell 17450 that I really like, is quite effective and is much quieter. This unit (17000N) might clean the air, but we couldn't stand to be anywhere near it to find out.

Works like a charm, just as the product description made it out to be. Comes with one replacement carbon filter included.
One thing I figured I'd mention is that it may not be as quiet as you're expecting. It's probably quieter than all the other air purifiers in its class, but sometimes at night, even on the low setting, I need to turn it off to get to sleep. Sometimes, though, I fall asleep without even realizing it's still on.

I have allergies/asthma and own both the Honeywell 18155 (in living room) and the 17000N (in home office). The Honeywell 18155 is MUCH quieter. It's even quieter on "high" than the smaller 1700N is on "low" -- both work very well.
