Editorial Review:

Product Description:
A modern approach to a very old technique; clay pots were commonly used for cooking in wooden ovens. Maintaining the same principles as outdoor cooking, this clay baker maintains the water it is soaked in, thereby enhancing the natural flavour of the food through self basting. All liquids, flavour, taste, nutrients, and vitamins are retained within the food, as it cooks in its own natural juices. Clay bakeware needs no fat or oil, and provides healthy cooking for meat, fish, poultry, bread and vegetables. A light glaze on the bottom of the baker ensures that food particles, flavours, and odours are not absorbed into the baker, and provides for easy cleanup.
3.5 litre capacity (serves 3 - 6 people).
Made of unglazed clay, with the exception of the interior of the base which is glazed.
Soak the lid in cold water for 30 minutes before first use; thereafter, soak the lid in cold water for 10 minutes prior to each use. Works with gas, electric, and microwave ovens. Start the cooking process in a cold oven (i.e., without preheating). Do not add cold liquids during the cooking time.
Clean the bottom (glazed) part of the baker with hot water, using a mild detergent, or place it in the dishwasher. Clean the top (unglazed) part of the baker using only hot water (if you must, add a drop or two of mild detergent). Do not use abrasives or scouring pads to clean the lid, and do not put it in the dishwasher.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I own six...
I found my first Schlemmertopf at a yard sale, never used and with instructions. Ten years later I own 6 different sizes including some Romertopf brands. I don't use anything else for baking, ever, with the exception being obvious things like pizzas or cookies. So far I have found many of mine second-hand; I believe this is because people don't use the bakers properly and think they don't work.

Let me be clear on this: you need to read the instructions. I'm not used to doing that, so I'm very grateful I did this time. You MUST soak the baker in water before using for the first ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Broken Merchandise
I cannot give a review because my Schlemmertopf cooker was broken when it arrived. I was highly disappointed. The packaging on the item was so bad that it was all but non-existent. I am not reordering because I am afraid it will be the same again.
