THE GUARDIAN is a disturbing film. It shows a middle class apartment surrounded by a high crime neighborhood as populated exclusively by two types: mostly white liberals who are afraid to face what they see as a sea of criminal faces and muggers who exist only to prey on them. Director David Greene clearly borrows a few pages of script and theme from DEATH WISH to present a pretty hopeless and helpless group of tenants who see their apartment as beseiged by street criminals.
