Vornado fans are THE BEST. They move the most air in the quietest manner and last the longest. The bigger they are the less noise is made by the moving air [the motor is very quiet].
But....I live in an old house that has a crawl space underneath. When I put this fan on high, on the hardwood floor, it vibrate and the floor and crawl space act like a drum to amplify that noise.
So I took it out of the living room and moved it to the back of the house, put it on a rug, and placed it in front of a screen door. SO much better!! No sound at all in the living areas.

When our Air Conditioner died yesterday and we were told it would be 4 weeks before the part was available to fix it (I think it's coming via canoe from the mainland), I immediately rushed out to buy some fans.
I was skeptical that a fan would keep us cool. My previous experience with fans has always been with the cheapie $19.99 fans from Wal Mart. A major concern with my fan purchase was the "finger chop-off factor" (FCOF) for my 1 year old. I tested every model in the store, and the Vornado models had the lowest FCOF.
